Ceramic Spine - 2024

3D Printed Ceramics, Cork, Steel, Plywood

W:55cm L:25cm H:32cm

This piece, one of the inaugural experiments from 2024, draws inspiration from the human body's structural elements. Analogous to the way bones, reminiscent of ceramics, function under compression and how muscles operate under tension, this artwork explores the balance of these forces.

The spine piece displayed features a series of non-planar, variably extruded ceramic vertebrae, interspersed with sheets of cork. These elements are held in place by cables and turnbuckles that mimic the tensile action of muscles.

The comparison images show the difference between components that have non-variable and variable extrusion.
